APIP 2010 Course Offerings

Additional information, including which instructors will teach which classes, specific and detailed syllabi, which texts will be used, and related links of interest will be posted following finalization of employment contracts.

This will also be the place to find information on mini-courses. APIP will offer a variety of such short-term courses every week as part of the immersion experience. Past offerings have included cooking, current events, yoga, singing, introduction to Islam and the Quran (including recitation), media, poetry, calligraphy, folk dance, fine arts, argumentation, colloquial dialects, and more.

Beginning Arabic

Intermediate Arabic

  • 8 Credits = Third Semester (104-323) + Fourth Semester (104-324)

  • Course description: The goals of this course are for you to increase your vocabulary, to develop your abilities in oral and written expression, and to complete the study of the fundamental syntactical and morphological structures essential to an understanding of modern literary Arabic. It is assumed that the students successfully completing this course will be proficient in the principles governing the voweling of texts and have a working knowledge of fundamental terms and concepts taught Arab secondary students in their study of Arabic morphology and syntax.

Advanced Arabic

  • 8 Credits = Advanced Reading I (104-445) + Adv Reading II (104-446) + Directed Study (104-669)
  • 180 Classroom Contact Hours (minimum)
  • Text: In accordance with the background of the students, instructors will use a variety of materials.
  • Course description: This section will focus on increasing proficiency in the four basic language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening), with primary emphasis on oral proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic. It is anticipated that those completing this course will achieve at least a degree of oral fluency equivalent to "intermediate high" on the scale devised by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Beginning Persian
